Understanding Light in Tropical Gardens: Full Sun, Partial Shade & Shade
Light is one of the most important factors in growing healthy plants. Yet terms such as full sun, partial shade and shade can sometimes be confusing, especially in a tropical climate like Malaysia.
A plant label may say “full sun”, but six hours of gentle morning sunlight is very different from six hours of hot afternoon sun.
Understanding the light conditions around your garden will make it much easier to choose the right plants and decide where to grow them.
Why Light Matters
Plants use light for photosynthesis, which allows them to produce the energy needed for growth.
Too little light can result in:
- long, weak or stretched growth;
- smaller leaves;
- pale foliage;
- slow growth; and
- fewer flowers.
Too much sunlight can also cause problems, especially for shade-loving plants. Leaves may become yellow, bleached, brown or scorched.
The goal is not to give every plant as much sunlight as possible. It is to provide the right type and amount of light for that plant.
What Is Full Sun?
Full sun generally means an area receiving around six hours or more of direct sunlight per day.
Typical full-sun areas include:
- open gardens;
- rooftops;
- exposed balconies;
- vegetable plots; and
- areas without overhead trees or buildings.
Plants such as bougainvillea, hibiscus, ixora, chillies, okra and many fruiting plants generally perform well under strong light.
However, tropical sunlight can be very intense. A newly purchased plant that was grown under nursery shade may still get sunburn if it is suddenly placed in full afternoon sun.
Introduce plants to stronger sunlight gradually where possible, especially plants coming from nurseries, indoor spaces or shaded growing areas.
Morning Sun and Afternoon Sun Are Not the Same
This is especially important in tropical gardens.
Morning Sun
Morning sunlight is usually gentler and is suitable for many tropical foliage and flowering plants.
A location receiving direct sunlight from around 7 am to 11 am may still be relatively gentle compared with the hotter afternoon sun.
Afternoon Sun
Afternoon sunlight can be much harsher.
West-facing walls, balconies and paved areas can become particularly hot because surrounding surfaces have already absorbed heat throughout the day.
This means a plant may tolerate four hours of morning sunlight but struggle badly with four hours of afternoon sunlight.
When someone says a plant needs “four hours of sun”, do not only ask how many hours? Also ask what time of the day?
What Is Partial Shade?
Partial shade generally refers to an area that receives some direct sunlight but is shaded for part of the day.
This could mean around three to six hours of direct sunlight, although the exact number is only a guide.
Examples include:
- morning sun followed by afternoon shade;
- gardens beside buildings;
- areas underneath lightly branched trees; and
- plants growing beneath taller plants.
Many tropical plants naturally grow under these conditions.
Begonias, many orchids, aroids, gingers, calatheas and ferns often prefer some protection from strong direct sunlight.
What Is Filtered or Dappled Light?
Filtered or dappled light occurs when sunlight passes through tree leaves, palms, shade netting or other plants.
You may see patches of sunlight moving across the ground throughout the day.
This is very common in tropical forests, where smaller plants grow underneath taller trees.
For many tropical ornamentals, this can be an excellent growing condition because they receive plenty of light without being continuously exposed to intense sun.
What Does Shade Actually Mean?
Shade does not mean darkness. Most shade-loving plants still need reasonably bright conditions to grow well.
Bright Shade
Bright shade receives plenty of indirect light but little or no strong direct sunlight.
Examples include:
- a covered patio open to the garden;
- a bright balcony without direct sun;
- underneath a lightly shaded tree canopy; and
- the shaded side of a house that still receives plenty of daylight.
Many tropical foliage plants grow very well here.
Deep Shade
Deep shade receives very little direct or indirect light.
Examples include dark corners between buildings or underneath very dense trees.
Only a limited number of plants will grow well under these conditions.
A plant may survive in deep shade for months, but surviving is not the same as growing well.

These are useful guidelines rather than strict rules.
How to Know If a Plant Needs More Light
Plants often give us clues.
A plant receiving too little light may:
- become long and leggy;
- lean towards the brightest area;
- produce smaller leaves;
- grow very slowly; or
- stop flowering.
For example, a flowering plant may remain healthy and green under shade but produce very few flowers because it does not receive enough light.
Signs of Too Much Sun
Too much direct sunlight may cause:
- yellow or bleached areas on leaves;
- brown scorch marks;
- dry or crispy leaf edges;
- severe afternoon wilting; and
- sudden leaf damage after moving a plant into a sunnier location.
Sunburn is especially common when plants are moved suddenly from indoor conditions or nursery shade into strong outdoor sunlight.
Damaged leaves usually do not recover, although new leaves can grow normally once the plant is placed in a more suitable location.
Observe Your Garden Before Choosing Plants
One of the easiest ways to understand your garden is simply to observe it at different times of the day.
Check the same location:
- in the morning;
- around midday; and
- in the afternoon.
An area that appears shady at 9 am may receive strong sunlight between noon and 4 pm.

Buildings and Trees Create Microclimates
Light conditions can change even within a small garden.
Trees, walls, balconies and neighbouring buildings may block or reflect sunlight.
A plant beside a light-coloured wall may receive considerably more reflected light than another plant only a few metres away.
Trees also change over time. As their canopy becomes larger, areas underneath them may gradually become more shaded.
Pruning can have the opposite effect and suddenly expose shade-loving plants to strong sunlight.
This is why the conditions in a garden are never completely fixed.
Don’t Follow Plant Labels Too Literally
Plant labels are useful, but terms such as “full sun” and “partial shade” are simplified.
A recommendation written for a cooler country may also not translate perfectly to Malaysia.
For example, a plant described overseas as suitable for full sun may benefit from some protection from intense tropical afternoon sunlight.
Observe how the plant responds to your own garden conditions. Local observation and experience are often the best guides.
A Simple Rule for Tropical Gardeners
When choosing where to place a plant, ask yourself three questions:
- How many hours of direct sunlight does this area receive?
- Does the sunlight come in the morning or afternoon?
- Is the area still bright when it is shaded?
These three questions will tell you much more than simply deciding whether an area is “sunny” or “shady”.
My Insights
Observe the plant you are interested in and, where possible, look at the environment in which it is already growing well.
Identifying its light and other growing conditions can provide useful clues. In many cases, you simply need to provide a similar environment in your own garden.
When you are unsure about a plant or its exact light requirement, dappled or filtered sunlight and bright indirect light are often a good starting point for many tropical plants.
You can then adjust its position depending on how the plant responds.

Understanding light is one of the most useful skills you can develop as a gardener.
In tropical gardens, it is especially important to consider not only how much sunlight a plant receives, but also when it receives it and how intense that sunlight is.
Full sun, partial shade and shade are useful starting points, but every garden has its own small microclimates.
Observe your plants and your garden carefully. If a plant is struggling, sometimes the solution is not more water or fertiliser.
It may simply need a better place to grow.
